Posts for consultants in George Regional Hospital, August 2018

George Regional Hospital has vacancies for the following:

  1. Head of clinical unit Radiologist
  2. Specialist psychiatrist
  3. Specialist orthopaedic surgeon
  4. Specialist gynaecologist

George Hospital is a 272-bed regional hospital serving the districts of Eden and Central Karoo in the Western Cape and is fondly referred to by the community as the best hospital in the country.

This is a largely rural area with a population of approximately 650 000 and a large catchment area of 62 185 km2.

On account of the distance to Cape Town, the hospital provides a quantum of tertiary services and has a district hospital responsibility for the population of George. The hospital has undergone significant renovation over the past years and has modern infrastructure and equipment and well maintained facilities, including 24 hour CT services, 4 operating theatres with a full endoscopic suite, ICU and a large renal dialysis unit, an on-site NHLS laboratory, and a modern psychiatric ward. The hospital also serves the surrounding PHC clinics and 10 district hospitals with outreach and support.

George Hospital employs 90 clinicians and 40 allied health professionals and all specialist disciplines are represented. Our nursing component is 350 strong. We have multiple contracted services with private providers offering access to nuclear medicine, MRI, neurophysiology, specialist optometry, chemo- and radiotherapy.

The Hospital is recognised as leading the development and implementation of electronic clinical information systems in the Western Cape. Undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes with UCT and Stellenbosch University include having students and registrars on the platform, and a well-established CME programme and numerous short courses encourages staff to develop continuously.

The hospital is nestled in the Garden Route, between the Outeniqua mountains and the Indian Ocean, an area of outstanding natural beauty and diverse indigenous forest, pristine coastline, and majestic mountains dotted with cycle paths. The outdoor lifestyle allows a healthy work-life balance, with safe living, a low crime rate, good municipal infrastructure, an airport, and numerous excellent state and private schools. Nelson Mandela University also has campus in town, allowing for a number of postgraduate studies. Many faith based organizations, an Arts Theatre, Botanical Gardens, and an array of cuisine restaurants cater for all the needs of its people.

George is home to various excellent schools, NMMU and South Cape College. A good quality, yet affordable, Western Cape lifestyle draws numerous families to the area yearly.
