About Radiology
Radiology is a part of medical science that specialises in the diagnosis of diseases by obtaining and interpreting medical images.
Medical images are obtained in a variety of ways, by using X-rays or radioactive substances, sound waves or magnetic fields. Radiology images are used in conjunction with clinical examination and other tests to formulate a diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
Radiological examination is used for patients of all ages and all parts of the body. Due to increasing complexity, radiologists are sub-specialising in specific areas of radiology.
The Radiology Team
Radiologist
Radiologists are medical specialists who, after completing their medical degrees, specialise for another four to five years in the interpretation of X-rays and scans. Training involves learning to understand and interpret images from X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI as well as advising referring doctors on the best ways of imaging for specific problems. Radiologists work in collaboration with referring doctors and specialists, providing advice and are always available to discuss the results of diagnostic tests and examinations with their patients. The radiologists' primary responsibility is the interpretation of these images and producing written reports on them.
Radiographer
Radiographers form part of the diagnostic team by operating the equipment and creating the X rays or images used by the radiologists to make their diagnosis. An essential part of their job is to explain the procedure to the patient and ensure that the equipment is used optimally. Radiographers qualify through formal training of up to four years and may go on to work exclusively in a specialist field of radiology.
For Patients
The Radiological Society of South Africa is a professional association dedicated to improving the quality of patient care.
The RSSA promotes and provides ongoing postgraduate education both for its members and allied health professions. RSSA sets performance standards and offers clinical guidelines to assist members in their commitment to maintaining professional standards.
For Medical Schemes
The RSSA promotes constructive interaction and co-operation between radiologists and our colleagues in related industries. Through ongoing programs of peer review and clinical guidelines, we demonstrate our commitment to appropriate, cost-effective radiology and value to purchasers and users of radiology.
